Fool n'Mad

The euphoria triggered by perfect weather about 10 days ago has died down.The
weather rating,according to me ,has gone down from 10 out of 10 to 7.This is
because winter is at the doorstep,knocking very hard. As the days pass,the temperature
goes down,the day becomes shorter,the temp. touching the bottom in July,with -degrees.But
the winter here is not as severe as in Europe and America.Winter has a negative side:as
the temps.go down,the electricity bill goes up.Thank God,there's no winter in Kerala.
Luckily,here there's no power cut.
This morning,we left earlier for school,at 6.35, in order to avoid sunlight coming
straight into the eyes,despite wearing sun glasses.I narrowly beat the sun in this
13 Km drive,along the national road.As I turn to the left,and take the road bordering
Lake Barberspan Bird Sanctuary,it's a smooth,pleasant ride for the next 22 kms,despite
14kms gravel road,all except 4 kms boardering the sanctuary.
If you see a film 2-3 times,you become bored and set it aside.But when you watch
simple things in nature,you never become bored.The 20-25 minutes drive to the school is the
most pleasant time of the day.To the right is the deep-blue lake,with the sun shining
above,casting a gloden net over it,in the land of gold,platinum and diamonds.There
are about 25 majestic ostriches roaming around freely,with their companions,bushbucks and
antelopes,playing in the sunlight.200 metres ahead of me,I saw a small 'Jatha' of a wild
pig and its six offspring,dashing across the road,in split seconds.Various kinds of birds fly
helter-skelter,scared by the sound of the car.The most scared is the Kada pakshi,whose
flight shows signs of panic.The most beautiful sight is that of hudreds of 'adakka kuruvikal',
which fly scattered like our SFI and KSU cadres ,during a lathi/teargas/water cannon
assault by the police in full riot gear!There are other,unscared formations of these birds,
flying in waves,just for morning fun.I wish to stop the car for a few minutes to see the
beauty of the lake,but the time is'ennichutta appam pole' ethanum minittukal mathram
schoolil ethan.When we return from school,the beauty of the morning is no longer there.
But the return sights aren't dull .It's delightful to watch hundreds of cattle,sheep and
goats grazing gently and peacefully in the ocean of grassland.
Fool n' Mad
This short poem by AVP can be regarded as his 'Arangettam' on the literary scene.
I'm sure that this young poet,with his talent and his passion for poetry,will reach
respectable heights very soon,with poems like ,"koodorukkan",which is well-thought
and nicely crafted.In Fool n' Mad,I see the thoughts of a teenager.Sometimes,a reader
or critic,prduces a different interpretation to the poem,far-fetched from what the poet
originally meant.I have no doubt that this is about the thoughts of a teenager.Perhaps
this originates from the poet's subconscious mind,where many things had been storeed,
and forgotten for some time.
In my pespective,the mind is like a great ocean,of which the dark bottom is unfathomable
to the owner of the mind.I can control my anger ,laughter and sorrow,but I can't control
the memories- the whales ,sharks,dolphins etc that come to the surface sometimes,producing
a ripple effect.Ormakal odiyethukayanu.Vilikkathe vanna athithikale pole.Angane
ormakal odiyethumbozhayirikkam oru kathayo kavithayo janikkunnathu.
Teenage is a period of great complexities,tension and conflict at least for some of the
teenagers.It's a period of turmoil within oneself,and of conflict with the outside
world.One might cross swords with established customs and practices.Some teenagers
revolve around the parents in the prescribed orbit,but some others don't buy this idea.
They want to steer clear of the gravitational pull of the parents,and to follow an orbit
of their own choice,with their own flight plans hidden to themselves.The best example
of the introspective,aloof,self-exiled teenager is none other than Romeo in Shakespeare's
play 'Romeo and Juliet'.

In this poem,I can find a re-incarnation of Romeo,even though the poem is very
short.Our ex-president,Dr APJ Abdul Kalam always exhorts young people to
dream and to work hard to achieve their dreams. But ,sometimes, a youngster's
dreams might be interpreted as mere craziness.The first two stanzas deal with
this issue.The speaker in the poem has dreams,but nobody appreciates them.There's
no recognition,no support,no approval.His dreams reach a dead end.
When dreams aren't significant
And the dreamer is irrelevant
Stopping to dreaming is the only way
So I choose that way
Still....
The first two stanzas convey the same idea.When I read these,veluppan kalathu oru
choodu dosa dosakkallil marichidunna oru anubhoothiyanu enikku undayathu.Oru
Malayaliye sambandichidatholam,choodu dosa oru metaphor aanu.oru nalla divasathe
kurichulla,pratheekshakalude aavi uyarunna onnu.
The still.......says a lot more than what meets the eyes.The poet thinks twice,and
reaches a bold conclusion.He decides to adhere to his convictions,to his philosophy,to
his chosen path,despite the harsh criticism,the mocking,the 'stoning' by an unkind
society and family,the stereotyping,the branding as 'Fool n'Mad' .He concludes:
Fool can dream,mad can dream
So I'll go on dreaming
These words indicate the speaker's unshakable resolve to go ahead with his dreams,
come what may.
In this context,it's worthwhile to read Robert Frost's poem,"The Road not Taken",
which echoes similar sentiments as in AVP's poem.

And that has made all the difference.
Young people face a dilemma when making choices about their career,marriage etc.
They are at a crossroads,and they are at a loss as to which road to take.AVP's poem
in an inspiration for young people to be sincere to themselves.Today's youth face
tough choices about career,marriage,homosexuality etc.
When I read Frost's line 'I took the one less travelled by',I remember a true story
that appeared on Tv last year.It's the unusual story of a young woman's true love and
dedication.Her lover was injured in a horrific car accident,and was paralyzed,waist
downwards,and was in a wheel chair.But this girl didn't hesitate to marry him and to
attend to him for the rest of her life.Some people might call her 'Fool n'Mad',but
she was only following her dream.
