In Kerala,yesterday,a woman was strangled to death by her husband.Today,a young woman was hacked to death by her husband,and the perpetrator surrendered to the police.The killing and abuse of women and children continues unabated in Kerala
,and tales of unspeakable horrors come to light every day.
But these horrors no longer hit the headlines because ,in Kerala,violence is the order rather than the exception.But there are some people who pooh pooh the view that Kerala is a violent society.They say" These things happen in other countries.In fact,we are better than other states in India, and other Third World countries." True.But why not follow the example of civilised countries in the first World? Why not envision a society where people can live in peace.
The claim that Kerala is the most educated,most developed state in India is hollow.Education without respect is useless.There is a general lack of respect in Kerala.Violence is the order of the day in many educational institutions.The burning of the Principal's chair by some students of Maharajas College sent shock waves among right-thinking people.That some lecturers were involved in that incident is extremely shocking.The burning of the chair is the metaphor of a violent,disrespectful society.
Two types of killings take place in Kerala.First,the apolitically-motivated killings.Second,killings related to domestic violence.Whatever be the reason,the killings are not taken seriously because the victims are from poor families.When actress Bhavana was kidnapped,there was a hue and cry about it. Who is the young woman who was hacked to death in Trichur? Nobody knows.It is irrelevant because she was poor.
In Kerala,one can get away with murder and rape.The present government recommended the early release of 1850 criminals,flouting Supreme Court guidelines.Luckily the Governor rejected the recommendations.The writing is on the wall.
