It was last year in December that I visited Poovaranthode, a hilly area 45 Kms from Kozhikode. I am here again.When u compared to the last visit,we are more in number, with Praveena and her three kids added to the group.Like the missing 20th hijacker, the person missing from our group is Praveena's husband, Siby, who landed in Mumbai last night.
We set out at 9 a.m; five adults and five children, in a Chevrolet Trivera. We stopped at Mukkam for breakfast. The food and the hospitality are commendable, and there is a wide variety of items to choose from.We had some Parottas packed for our destination because the place is sparsely populated, and there are no hotels around.
The journey up the hills after Koodaranji was
a test for the driver, to manage the hairpin curves and steep ascend.At some stages,the road is damaged. Anyway, we reached Poovaranthode on time.
Ajay's uncle, Kariachen lives near the road
He and his family had left for Kanoor the previous night for a wedding, and had
left the house keys with a neighbour.
Last year,our trip was incomplete because we
missed the major attraction, which is the farms owned by Aju and his father, 3 kms uphill.
This time, a Jeep is available for the gruelling
journey.We set out at 11 a.m.The tar road ended after 300 metres.Then began a test for man and machines,and of course, for our bones and joints too.The path is strewn with
boulders of all sizes and shapes, with no room
for comfort.For us it seemed a nightmare,but
the driver was unshaken.and surmounted every
obstacle with a smile.After 25 minutes, the Jeep reached the yard of the
farmhouse.
The place is cool.The air is thin and 100%pure.
Coffee trees,jathi, plantains, cardamom etc are
growing abundantly in the area.I was astounded by the tranquility of the place. It is
a unique experience to breathe pure air and to.
feel the pin drop silence.small birds and butterflies are seen occasionally.
The children flocked to a stream nearby.It originates somewhere high up in the mountains, and flows winding its way around huge boulders.The water is pure and cool,soft and drinkable.The children had a wonderful time playing in the water.
The return journey was easier. We had a late
lunch,with biriyani and other items.In the house,the owners had left a variety of bananas,papaya etc for us.They had advised us to pack some of the farm produce for home consumption.
As mentioned before, the downhill journey was easier, and with full satisfaction.
