EXAM TIPS FOR BAKOLOBENG STUDENTS ( SOUTH AFRICA)

DELAREYVILLE 22 OCTOBER  2013

Much- expected  rains have finally  fallen, lowering temperatures  and cooling our  minds.Even
though  the rainfall in this area  has been limited, the cooling effect of heavy rains in other parts
of the country  has been  felt  here also. The cool weather is ideal  for preparing for an examination
and  for the actual  writing of it.

The  Grade 12 learners of Bakolobeng  Secondary  School  start their exams on 28th October,
with  English FAL  Paper 1. Study methods and writing strategies have already been given, but
no effort is excessive in encouraging and motivating the learners to do their utmost to produce
excellent results.

Brutus

There is a tide in the affairs of men,
Which, taken at the flood, leads on to fortune:
Omitted, all the voyage of their life,
Is bound in  shallows and  miseries.   ( Julius  Caesar, Act 4, Scene 3 )

Brutus  says this when he is discussing  battle plans with his colleague, Cassius. He means
that, if we don't  seize the opportunities  available, they will be lost and we will face utter
defeat.

This is a time of opportunities for Grade 12 learners to produce excellent results, which
will open new doors for them  for the future. Brutus's words imply that, with poor results,
there will be 'miseries', resulting from unemployment.

Some learners have an attitude in their minds. " I'm Ok with this subject. This is enough for me."
Such an attitude is counter-productive. Every learner  should try to improve his/ her Preparatory
marks by at least 5 % .

As  the exams begin with English paper 1, learners should sit for the first exam fully prepared,
and with a fresh mind. It's advisable to  spend the weekend preparing for Monday's paper.
This can be done by doing past question papers and discussing with study partners.

It's always beneficial to clear your doubts by consulting  your teacher.

It's a waste of time and energy to engage in activities such as attending parties and travelling
far at the weekend.

Arrive at the exam Centre on time. Carry your Time Table and two good pens.

Use the full time in an examination. If some time is left, use it to read your answers, and make
corrections if necessary. For example, some learners forget to use full stops, question marks,
commas etc. Another common mistake is the use of  small letters in the beginning of a name.
eg  cape town  instead of Cape  Town.

Read  the questions  very carefully. Follow the instructions .

Start  each  section on a new page. Skip one line after each answer.

Cancel all the rough work. eg the rough copy of a summary.

Do revision by writing sentences of your own  which contain nouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs,
tenses, direct  speech, indirect speech, passive voice, punctuation, question tags ,prepositions, negatives etc. Write  sentences of your own in direct speech and indirect speech.

A  thing well-begun is half done.

Regarding the use of the social media, it's necessary to drastically reduce the time spent on chat until after the end of all exams. GOOD  LUCK.
