TOMORROW'S HEADLINES ( OPINION )

The results of the Kerala Elections are already out. The people have won,by voting en masse on 16th May,in a peaceful, orderly, exemplary manner, many of them ignoring physical handicaps, old age, hostile terrains, and bad weather. The visuals of very old ,sick and disabled people carried on make -shift stretchers to a  polling booth on a hill in Pathanamthitta District was really heartbreaking. Their only demand is a polling booth downhill, accessible to them.

The key issue today isn't whether it's the LDF or the UDF that will win a majority tomorrow. The key issue is whether the next ruling coalition will receiprocate the people's faith in democracy by addressing their problems,eg safe drinking water, quality education, health care, safety, housing etc. Some Kerala polticians try to hoodwink the people using empty rhetoric, with jokes as icing. The people didn't vote to be entertained with lengthy  speeches and jokes; they voted for real change that will
improve their daily lives.

No matter who is in power, the ordinary people generally don't get help from Government departments. For example, a young woman died in Kottarakkara allegedly because the doctor didn't attend to her. Such incidents are common in Kerala, and nobody is brought to book for lapses that risk the lives of the ordinary people.

Bribery and corruption at the lower levels is accepted as a Kerala custom, and there's no condemnation of it.

There's no facilty for waste disposal at many places.People dump waste wherever they like, eg at street corners. Even if a citizen wants to put waste in a dustbin, it cannot be found.

Malayalees who visit Kerala for holidays notice a strange thing.
In Kerala, Government offices open after 10 a.m.,whereas in most countries, offices open at 8 a. m. Even after opening late, the people's problems are not attended to. Both the LDF and the UDF are too scared to change the situation. Is the new Government bold enough to open Government offices at 8 a.m in Kerala? Can the new Government eradicate petty bribes? If not, stop your lengthy speeches and icing jokes.

Following the Somalia comparison, most Malayalees erupted in anger and boasted that Kerala is First World. This is a myth. For instance, if a citizen is knocked down by a vehicle, nobody offers help, and the injured person usually bleeds to death in broad daylight. Is the new Government humane enough to offer help to the needy? It's doubtful. The people have done their part perfectly in the democratic process, and tomorrow the ball will be in the elected leaders' court.

(Viewpoint)

A POEM FOR BAKOLOBENG STUDENTS

A  poem   for  Bakolobeng    students  April   25th   was  a memorable   day  at  Bakolobeng   Secondary   School for   many   reasons. It  was the  last working  day of the  month  due to  a  long   weekend and  extended  special  school  holidays. For  me and  for Mrs. Visser, the  Principal, it was  our  last day  in our  careers. By  a  lucky coincidence, it was  my birthday. I   heard  that  the teachers, students  and the School  Governing  Body members  had  planned  a  special assembly  to  honour us. I thought  that the assembly  was  after  lessons, but  they  wanted to ...

VAGAMON

Vagamon doesn't need any introduction. It's known as a place of unique biodiversity, a favourite location for film shooting, and a popular destination for day visitors. We set out for a day trip to Vagamon on Sunday, 8 May,from Kottayam. The roads in Kottayam District are generally of international standards, particularly the road from Pala to Erattupetta. On our way, we stopped at Bharanganam to attend Holy Mass, and for breakfast in the Canteen. Initially, I was doubtful about the service there, because often, in such places where large number of people gather, the services may not be satisfactory. But I was proved wrong  by the good service and the quality of the food served there. Indeed Bharanganam is an exemplary pilgrim centre, with excellent roads, ample space for parking ,scenic beauty etc. Personally speaking, Kerala's beauty is felt when we move away from city centres, and climb uphill through winding roads, watching the hills and mountains. As the roads ar...
