Ninakkayi
Sony Karackal has beaten me in the race of uninterrupted poetry,or Marathon poetry,
with my review ,by about 24 hours.I was about to give up,because our schools are opening
on 9th April, and I have butterflies in my stomach due to pending school work.I was about
to give up,when I read the poem, and found many beautiful concepts and lines in it,which
deserve a closer look.
Pranayam has been the pet theme of SK,and I have earlier pointed out that ee pranayagayakanu, allenkil theerthadakanu vazhimary sancharikkanavilla ennu.Even if
he occasionally takes a detour, he returns to his basecamp pranayam, like a fighter pilot
returning to his base.Pranayam has been the favourite theme of all kinds of artists since
time immemorial, and continues to be so,and it will be ever fresh till doomsday.Artists
have tried to define pranayam in different ways, but there is no end to it.I think pranayam
is that blessed feeling in which you want to be with a loved person as long as possible,
not feeling the passing of time, you are totally focused on that person, and you are never
satisfied with seeing that person.
The best example of this is found in 'Romeo and Juliet',the greatest love story of
all times. In the Balcony Scene in Romeo and Juliet',Romeo enters Juliet's orchard in
the night, despite grave risks. Both Romeo and Juliet talk for a long time, but both of
them want to prolong their conversation.
Juliet
I will not forget,t's twenty years till then
I have forgot why I did call thee back.
Romeo
Let me stand here till thou remember it
Juliet
I shall forget,to have thee still stand there
Remembering how I love your company
Romeo
And I'll stay ,to have thee still forget
Forgetting any home but this
Sorry for entering the forest (kadu kayaruka). But a study of pranayam will be incomplete
without mentioning Romeo and Juliet.
In 'ninakkayi' the poet says that even the anxiety and tension associated with pranayam
is enjoyable. He emphasizes that pranayam can't be achieved without sweat and
tears.
hrudayangalilekku vazhuthumbol
kanneerinte nanutha ruchiyundu
How many young people have undergone the agony and ecstasy in their reaching the
goal of pranayam!.Some have even sacrified their lives to be together ,at least in death,
like Romeo and Juliet.
SK has used beautiful metaphors such as 'seed' and 'leaf' to express the triumph of love.
eg 'vithmulachorila eerilayayi' ennu kavi padumbol, pranayathinte lolathaye aanu soochippikku
kkunnathu.Ee randila kurunninu valare srdhayum paricharanavum aavasyamanennu
aanennu ivide dhwaniyundu.Ethu nimishavum ee randila vadippokam. But the poet is very
positive about the future. This is evident from the line
parsarathinte choodum
nilavinte thangum
thanalumundu.
Again, the poet uses the imagery of tenderness,in the line
kuda choodathe ninna kulirmazha
In many poems,SK has used the imagery of light rain, which is a favourite of many
poets and artists,eg Film director Kamal.
The poem ends with a dream-like concept
pranayathin pathinalam ravil
peythu nirayum mazha
The above lines the ultimate bliss the couple has attained.14aam ravu is a heavenly
concept. When I read this phrase,a beautiful song of Dasettan electrified my imagination:
pathinalam ravudichathu manatho,kallayi kadavatho
panineerin poovirinjathu muttatho,kannadi kavilatho
The concept of 14aam ravu indicates the frution of love. There 's an atmosphere of
celebration in the concluding lines.
The visuals,as usual, enhances the romantic atmosphere of the poem.
