SAGARANGALIL
If my memory is correct, there was an unprecedented flooding of the Meenachil
river in 1968,when I was a student at STC Pala.It was so dramatic that,Kottaramattom
Maidan, now Private bus stand, became a lake, and some adventurers were seen paddling
in the newly formed lake,in their kothumbu vallams. After a few days, when the waters
subsided,we went to see the fury of the river. It was carrying a lot of things from uphill,
uprooted trees,stray coconuts,remnants of huts,carcasses of domestic animals etc.This
long-forgotten incident resurfaced in my mind when I saw the flood in Facebook.Face book's
flooding is forever;rising,expanding,bursting the banks,nonstop.
Like-minded people think in the same trajectory,as is evidenced by my recent thoughts
about Facebook,and by Sony karackal's poem "Sagarangalil''.In fact,I am
a newcomer in facebook.Since I joined,I have reflected about this universal forum
of friendship,freedom,sharing,self-expression,goodwill and generosity.While people
of goodwill dominate Fb,there are some rotten apples in it.
ksheeramullorakiitlum chora thanne kothukinnu kauthukam
(even under the milk-filled udder',a mosquito is interested in blood.)
Unfortunately, some evil people have used fb as a mask to carry out their nefarious
activities, targetting the vulnerable and the gullible-women.Many women have become
sitting ducks for treacherous crooks to defraud, rape, rob, blackmail and for bogus
marriages .The problem is that, nowadays crooks are more educated and sophisticated
than ever before.Today's crooks are educated, multilingual, flamboyant cowboys who
have celebrity status. They are handsome,well-built like Salman Khan, because ,with
the ill -gotten wealth they wine and dance, amassing a loyal horde of sexy women
willing to undress at a simple nod. When some Bundy Chor,Kindy Chor or Thendy Chor
is arrested, it comes to light that these are womanisers with a large following in fb.Bundi
Chor even took part in a celebrity show,he has many female fb follwers, and his story was
made into a film.
Willaim Shakespeare is regarded as the greatest poet because he has refered to everything under
the sun.Coincidentally, there are some lines in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, which
give a hint about Facebook.Juliet's mother ,Lady Capulet, wants to arrange a marriage
for Juliet ,with a rich young man called Paris. She says:
This precious book of love, this unbound lover
To beautify him, only lacks a cover.
Here Paris is compared to a book, and Juliet will enrich his beauty by marrying him,as a
book cover beautifies a book.
Most amazing is the repeated use of 'like' in Romeo and Juliet
lady Capulet
Speak briefly, can you like of Paris's love ?
Juliet
I'll look to like,if looking liking move
Have you noticed that 'like' is the most liked ,and the most used word in Fb?
In his poem 'Sagarangalil", Sony Karackal looks at Fb in a humourous perspective.
As a seasoned veteran of Fb,he knows the secrets of this ocean.I think he is an experienced
diver who has seen the depths of the ocean. He has had close encounters with fish of
various shapes ,sizes and colours.
It's most effective that SK has used the metaphor of hook to denote chat .Here 'meen''
definitely refers to women.
kure vamban sravukal
oolayittu bhayappeduthi madangum
I think ,in the above lines, the poet is refering to some powerful men,or crooks, blackmailing
women.
The poem is self-explanatory,in simple, straight language.
The most humourous lines are:
mattu chilathu mukkuvaneyum valichu
choondayadakkam aazhakkadalilolikkum
I think he is refering to some of today's women who are audacious enough to embark
on their own Fb adventures. Some of them are 'kaduvaye pidicha kiduva''.I don't blame
them. These are the days of gender equality.Let them have their fair share of fb.
The visuals of a sexy woman chatting, creates the dreamworld of 'chat'.
