Ilamveyil
I have heard of a church at Kothanalloor near Ettumanoor, which is devoted
for twins, triplets and quadruplets, and when the 'perunnal' is on there, onlookers
are at a loss as to find out who is who. When reading SK's poems ,I am facing
the predicament of the spectator at Kothanalloor. He has written many poems
on the same theme 'pranayam',and sometimes it's difficult to distinguish one
from the other,at first glance. This doesn't imply that he has made repetitions.
Indeed ,he has treated his theme from different angles.
The present poem'Ilamveyil' treats pranayam from a rare perspective. The
metaphor of the rising sun:
udayasooryaneppol
ninmukham thudukkumbol
is a devaition from poets' usual practice of using the imagery of the
full moon to depict the face of the pranayini or the mood of love eg indumukhi, chandrikayilaliyunnu
chandrakantam,madhumasa sundara chandralekha etc
But William Shakespeare, the greatest poet of all times, has used the metaphor
of the sun in Romeo and Juliet. In the Balcony scene,at dawn,Romeo is in
Juliet's orchard,unnoticed by Juliet,who is at the balcony,deep in thought.Observing
her beauty,Romeo says to himself:
But soft, what light through yonder window breaks
It is the east, and Juliet is the sun.
Arise, fair sun,and kill the envious moon
Who is already sick and pale with grief
(Act 2 Scene 2)
Perhaps by 'mujjanma sukrutham' or by design,SK has used the imagery
of the sun in 'ilamveyil'.
Udaya sooryanepol
Ninmukham thudukkumbol
The speaker in this poem is drawn to his pranayini by the gravitational
force of true love. There's a union of two intimate persons. It's a moment
of reaching the highest peak of love, as in:
Athiprabhathathileykku
Njanudikkukayanu
The intimacy is like that of a remote and an electronic device. The pranayini's
beauty and love activates the speaker. The little quarrels in love are a catalyst
for the blossoming of love, not an impediment.Pranayathile soundarya
pinakkangal himakanagal pole thalkshanam alinju pokunnu.
Alinjakalunna paribhavangalum
The speaker compares her to soft rain in sunlight, which is rare. This imagery
augments the feather touch softness and smoothness of the poem. The poet
has painted rare moments of intimacy,in soft, romantic, decent phrases.
The speaker and the pranayini reach the peak or 'sayoojyam' or ecstasy
when she leans against his chest, which is a body language of full intimacy
and acceptance. The speaker merges with her in mind and body.He shrinks
into the cage of her love, and they are one.
The poem's conclusion is very fitting, because it began with sunrise and ends
with sunset.

Njan asthamikkukayanu.
Here,sunset doesn't mean the end but it's a fresh start.The poet gives us a
clue as to what's to follow. The poem ends with sexy connotations.

It is sweet sounding linguistic criticism. It is cool. I quite appreciate your view of the specific lines. Congrats.
