Kilikkoodukal
This poem has originated from the poet's heart,so it's devoid of any artificiality.Birds are a
passion for me in poetry and in real life.Keats's "ode to a Nigtingale 'is a favourite poem
of mine.Perhaps the greatest of all poems.Birds are a metaphor of love, freedom and peace.
I'm fortunate enough to wake up early ,listening to the kalapila of birds in my compound.Around my house, there;s always the sound of flapping of wings, and the kurkal of pigeons. On my way
to school,I meet various types of birds everyday.Association with the birds, even though from
a distance, has had a positive impact on my mind, purging me of the harshness and cruelty in me.
Birds teach us about love, peace, harmony, and sharing.Let us teach our children to love
trees and birds,so that they learn gentleness and love.Let us follow the footsteps of
Saint Francis of Assissi, who is the patron saint of animals and birds.
When I read 'kilikkoodukal'',a famous song by Yesudass popped up in my mind. It's a song
of grief' ''Parannu poy neeyakale, ninamarnna chirakumay,parannakannoo...
Some readers might wonder why I remember some songs.Actually I was a singer during my
college days.In 1970,I shared stage with Kumarakom Rajappan,Prem Prakash,Jolly Abrahamm
Raphi Jose,J.MRaju etc,at Pala for a concert. The song that I renedered was "Amrutham pakarnna rathri, anubhuthi peytha rathri'' from "Vidhi",a Malayalam remake of "Thakdeer",for which
Laxmikant Pyarelal composed the music. My favourite song of last year was ."Onninumallathe' from
the film "Novel" which I sang at the Catholic Conferenece held at Mmabatho last year.
"Kilikkoodukal is a touching poem ,because most of the married people ,at some stage, have
had similar experiences as illustrated in this poem.Vivahajeevithathile kochu pinakkangale
cakente icing ennu venam visheshippikkan. It's part of married life. You may refuse to eat
lunch, sleep in another room for a night, refuse to talk to each other for a day,but pinakkathine
manju, snehathinte veyilettu urukippokum. You have no option but to reconcile.
The speaker in this poem was very possessive and harsh.eg "thadavilay snehichen".he wanted her
to dance to his tune, but she didn't yield."Annoru ravil thurannu vittoo dure" shows the harsh
treatment meted out to his wife. The man didn't like her liberal outlook. He seems to be
a workaholic or technocrat,who didn't know how to love.But he wasn't entirely cruel.His
illtreatment of his wife haunted him like an albatross. This is evident from the phrase,
''vingunnorormayayi".The memory of it pricked his conscience.
''pinne vannen jalakappadiyil, branthu pidichoramanassumayi"This line is very touching
because of the immense pain felt by both. The poet's remorse is felt in the line,''pulkiyanachen
painkiliye".''en'' emphasizes the strong bond the speaker had with his wife.
The poet concludes emphasizing that, even if you have a brief separation, you have no
choice but to reconcile.Indeed, the reunion is a test of true love.
Perhaps the poet had the unfortunate saga of Ganesh Kumar in mind when he penned
'kilikkoodukal".Maybe, one day these couples will reconcile, forgive and foget, and turn
a new leaf in their lives.Yathartha snehathe koottil adachidan kazhiyukayilla.Koodukal swarthathaye aanu soochippikkunnathu.Kilikal aakasathu swathanthrarayi pari parakkatte.''remember
aayiram kannumayi,kathirunnu ninne njan....."
