THE CHARACTERS
1.KUNJAN (45)
2AMMINI (35) -KUNJAN'S WIFE
3 KUNJUKOCHU (96)-A NEIGHBOUR
Kunjan's house. He is reading a newspaper. Ammini is cleaning the verandah. Enter Kunjukochu
Kunjan
It's ages since you passed this way. You used to visit us at least once a week. We used to have lively debates about many things, especially before the elections. What happened?
Ammini
What prevents you from saying "Hello" to us ?
Kunjukochu
There is nothing specific. But there is a combination of factors that make me depressed. I am particularly disill-
usioned about the wrong direction of the LDF government.
Kunjan
The new government is doing a good job.
Kunjukochu
I do'nt think so. They came to power promising dramatic changes, but nothing has changed for the man in the street. The plight of the common people has doubled due to heavy, unjust and unpopualr taxes. I have one acre of useless land, but the new government regards
me as a feudalist landlord, and has imposed heavy taxes for gifting my land to my six children. Where will I find lakhs of Rupees for stamp duty and the like.
Kunjan
The government has to find money for its social commitments. People have to do some sacrifices.
Kunjukochu
Phoo...It's utter rubbish! Did the new ministers sacrifice anything? Did any one of them give up luxurious homes, allowances, perks etc.It is mere hypocrisy and empty
rhetoric. It is really a rip off.
Ammini
I fully agree with you.
Kunjukochu
The tax burden is a minor thing compared with the culture of violence nurtured by the LDF. There's absolutely no respect in the country. The leaders add fuel to the fire using provocative language. Not a single day passes without brutal killings.Killing has become a national sport. It's a vicious culture of 'Tooth for tooth, and an eye for an eye'
Kunjan
You can't blame the government for everything. These things used to happen in the past.
Kunjukochu
The rulers must lead by example. They should not treat people on party lines. They should give up the path of arrogance.Anyway,Kerala has gone to the dogs. There is no respect in the country.
Ammini
That is true. For example, the conflict between the lawyers and the media people.
Kunjukochu
You are absolutely correct. That is a symptom of the malaise that is plaguing Kerala. No respect, no dignity. Foul language and liquor bottles.Phoo....lawyers ! No they are lowers.Lowers who tarnish the image of Kerala, and entrench Kerala as a Banana Republic.I have only a few years to live. But what about the young generation,a generation which is enslaved by the culture of viloence , disrespect and drugs.
Ammini
Don't lose hope, Kunjukochu. Things might improve.
Kunjukochu
I don't think so. Heavy rain is coming. I am leaving. Bye
Kunjan
Bye.
