The attack on Oommen Chandy- a Pravasi's perspective ( opnion )
The vicious attack on Honourable Chief Minister Sri Oommen Chandy at Kannur, allegedly by CPM goondas, has shocked and saddened civilised , peace-loving Malayalees in India and abroad.
But , unfortunately, there are some people ,who are uncivilised anarchists who celebrate ,rejoice, and
justify the cowardly and barbaric attack on the Chief Minister. They are happy that , at least, one of them was able to injure Ommen Chandy, and of course there are others who regret that he escaped death. Such people can be found on the social media, making crude jokes about Sri Chandy's injury.
It's a true reflection of the scum that are baying for the blood of Oommen Chandy. Some gutter
channels play second fiddle to these barbarians !
But every decent Malayalee has reacted with utter shock, indignation and grief following the
callous attack on Sri Chandy, who has served Kerala selflessly for over half a century. It's not
in our culture to show disrespect to public figures. It's an obligation of every civilised Malayalee,
especially Pravasis, to raise our voices against goondaism.
Pravasis have to reflect deeply about this ugly episode in the history of Kerala. First, why are
lakhs of malayalees live and work in the Middle East, Europe, America, Africa, Australia, South
East Asia etc? Why do we feel happy , peaceful and safe overseas ? The answer is that ,
where Pravasis live, there's rule of law and prosperity, which go hand in hand.
Lakhs of Malayalees are living and working in the Gulf states because there's rule of law, and
adherence to laws of the land, which create ideal conditions for stability and prosperity. I don't
know whether any Malayalee is working in Iraq. It's not ideal for a foreigner to be there because
Iraqui people are daily slaughtered in bombings. Where rule of law prevails, as in the developed
countries and Gulf states, where Kerala model blockades, Hartals, stone-throwing,rotten-egg throwing are unthinkable, there's prosperity that requires foreign nationals to participate in running
their booming economies. It's common knowledge that lakhs of families in Kerala are dependent
on remittances pouring from overseas.
I don't know whether any Malayalee is working in Communist Cuba, which is a role model for
our young communists. It's highly unlikely because we don't know of any country on earth which has
prospered under communism. We know that 1950s model American cars are still the majority vehicles on the streets of Havana. We also know that Cubans are hugely dependent on remittances
from Cubans living in the USA. Remember the naivety of Cuba Mukundan in " Arabikatha'
who was eager to work in Cuba !
It's most unlikely that any Malayalee is working in the hermit kingdom of Communist North Korea,
a country that has been under the rule of the brutal Kim Il Sung family for three generations, over
60 years. That country is notorious for unimaginable atrocities, personality cult and slavery.
Pravisis work in the First World, or in pockets of the First World in Third World. Free-thinking
pravasis wish to have First World conditions in our beloved State, Kerala. Majority of the
people love peace, stability and progress, because we enjoy these conditions abroad. But this is
an unattainable dream under the present conditions, due to the violence and unnecessary agitations
spearheaded by the CPM.
The attack on Sri Chandy has tarnished the image of Kerala in the eyes of the whole world, reducing
its status to a banana republic where the Chief Minister can be attacked and injured with impunity.
Henceforth, Kerala will be regarded as a lawless country.
There are two types of Pravasis. First, the vast majority of those who want to go back and lead a
peaceful life of retirement. Second, those who are settled in foreign countries, and occasionally travel to Kerala to 'enjoy' a vacation. Most often, the much-anticipated vacation is in tatters due to some
' bandh' or ' vazhithadayal' sponsored by the CPM. Those who return to settle permanently, face
various hardships due to instability caused by strikes, bandhs and blockades initiated by the CPM.
Pravasis are forced to part with substantial amounts of money due to '' nokkukooli' , a practice
unheard of anywhere else in the world ! Children's education is disrupted by frequent strikes. The
campaign against Oommen Chandy cost the children many working days. Most disgusting is
the attempt to instill a sense of disrespect among the children.
History is replete with many incidents of fatal attacks on popular public figures. Abraham Lincoln,Mahatma Gandhi, John Kennedy, Robert kennedy, Martin Luther King, Anwar Sadat,
Mujbur Rehman, Indira Gandhi, Yitzak Rabin, Benzir Bhutto, etc fell to assassins' bullets.
Ronald Reagan and Pope John Paul 2 narrowly escaped death. In all these cases, the motive
for the attack was personal grudge and hatred. The attack on Oommen Chandy was motivated
by personal hatred .In a democracy, the people have the right to protest peacefully and to express
their views through various media. To attack a person physically is the style of terrorist organizations like Al Queda and the Thaliban.
The acronym LDF is most laughable and pathetic. What kind of democracy do they practise,
throwing stones at the Chief Minister of the state? Democracy is a mechanism whereby civilised
human beings can solve their problems through peaceful dialogue, and mutual respect is an integral
ingredient of democracy. It's a departure from the practices of the cavemen of prehistoric times, who
fought each other with chipped stones, bones, sticks and sometimes ate the vanquished!
Much can be learned about the degeneration of the human mind by personal hatred in Shakespeare's
' Julius Caesar'. It can be described as the tragedy of Brutus, who believes the lies told by his friend,
Cassius, who harbours a personal hatred against Julius Caesar. Cassius hatches a plot to assassinate
Caesar. Brutus is a highly respected public figure of Rome. He had no interest in state matters. But
Cassius misleads him to believe that Caesar is becoming a dictator. To convince Brutus, Cassius
plays some dirty tricks such as writing fake letters in the name of citizens ,pleading with Brutus to
free Rome from the oppression by Caesar. ( remember the dirty tricks played by the gutter channels
during the failed '' Secretariat blockade',in which they showed a fake photo of Saritha whispering
in Oommen Chandy's ear.).Brutus joins the conspirators to assassinate Caesar. But both Cassius
and Brutus are defeated in the civil war that follows. One striking thing in the play is that Cassius
turns out to be a corrupt man, who was involved in bribery. All the conspirators except Brutus
were motivated against Ceasar because of personal hatred. The play shows how good people are
sometimes misled by others , and are led to their own doom. Both Cassius and Brutus commit suicide,
in the face of imminent defeat. In the ranks of the LDF, there are good people like Brutus, who blindly believe what their leaders and the gutter channels dish out to them.
The present status of the CPM in Indian politics is very pathetic. In the early years of modern India,
the Communist party was a force to reckon with, under great leaders like A.K .Gopalan, EMS, Jyothi Basu, M.N, etc who earned the respect and admiration of all the people across party lines due to their
polite attitude to their opponents, in sharp contrast with the arrogant attitude of the present leadership,
who alienate more and more people with their irresponsible, malicious utterances and undemocratic methods. The utterances about Oommen Chandy's injury by some CPM leaders is most obnoxious and deplorable. No sensible Pravasi can digest such utterances, because in the countries we live,we
see courtesy and mutual respect in our daily lives.
Some political parties which were born in post-independent India have outdistanced the CPM,and
are wielding power in many states. eg the BJP, SP, AIADMK, Trinamul Congress, NCP, Biju Janathadal etc. Narendra Modi is a strong contender for prime ministership. With the attack on
Oommen Chandy, the CPM is again alienating the people. Strangely enough , the LDF has decided to go ahead
with the march to the CM's house. Pravasis who have booked for flights to Kerala are
quite likely to lose a few days due to the LDF's fruitless agitation. They are determined to ruin the
remaining days of 2013. " Cry,the beloved State'.
