The rising intolerance in Kerala
The rising intolerance in Kerala is alarming. We, as Pravasis, are not directly affected by this, but we are deeply concerned because we love our state, and want it to be at par with the civilized nations of the world.
Not a single day passes in Kerala without violent protests in some parts of the state, for issues that can be solved peacefully and amicably. Some self-appointed guardians of democracy, constantly wait on the wings to launch violent protests, causing much tension, injuries , disruptions and damage to property.
For instance,in some cases when a patient dies in hospital, the relatives of the deceased pounce on the doctors and hospital management, accusing them of negligence, and assault them and vandalise the hospital. The so- called activists join the bandwagon to settle old scores.
When there is a bus accident, the onlookers set fire to the bus, venting their anger.Young lovers are harassed and assaulted by the self-styled moral police ( goondas).Government offices are blockaded and staff harassed, accusing them of corruption and mismanagement. To add fuel to fire, hartals are declared at random, paralyzing normal life.
The perpetrators of these unlawful activities don't know the ABC of democracy.
The basic idea of democracy is to find peaceful ways to solve people's problems, through peaceful negotiations, mutual respect ,tolerance and flexibility. If a few people are allowed to take the law into their own hands, it will lead to anarchy.
Questions need to be raised the organizations that launch wildcat protests, such as the DYFI, SFI,
ABVP, YUVAMORCHA,CAMPUS FRONT,YOUTH CONGRESSetc. Are these people employed or attend colleges? If "yes" what do they contribute to society by their disruptive behaviour while they are supposed to be at work or at college ?
If they are unemployed, aren't they to be blamed for their own predicament due to their irresponsible
activities that scare potential investors from the state ? These people must remember that Kerala's
economy is largely based on Pravasi remittances, and that hartals and violence are unaccetable to us.The growing intolerance in Kerala boils down to the low quality of education in the state. Some
Malayalees boast of high educational standards, but judging by international standards we cut a
pathetic figure.
True education is the moulding of competent,responsible,law-abiding citizens , empowered by qualities of mutual respect, tolerance, leadership skills, compassion for the less privileged, and respect for the environment.Unfortunately, most of our colleges are killing fields where students fight each other with knives and stones. Many youths have lost their lives for nothing.
Learn from the Norwegians
On 22 July 2011, a right wing extremist called Andries Behring massacred 77 youths at a youth camp in Norway. Keralites can learn a valueable lesson about democracy from the way the Norwegian people responded to that tragedy. They reacted with utmost composure, patience, love and
unity rallying behind their government, reasserting their faith in democratic values. They carried flowers, not stones like some Keralites. This is the difference between a civilized society and a barbaric society. It's the obligation of peace-loving Malayalees to unite against the growing intolerance in Kerala.

Sir, I happened to read this after almost four years of you publishing the blog. You are absolutely right, and the points you mentioned are very relevant even in 2016. People living in Kerala have become very much intolerant over the last fifteen years or so. We can realize that when we travel to, or live in other states or in many other countries. Only uneducated thugs in other states of India behave like the so called educated Keralites when they encounter a negative situation or incident. Very sad!
