Nowadays a small camera can wreak havoc in the world, destroying global business empires.
Sometimes people say, referring to God, '' Don't do evil, there's somebody watching from above.''
This is enough to force God-fearing people to think twice before doing evil. But nowadays, the fear
of the camera is the most effective deterrent ,because cameras are aimed at you from above, below,
on the sides, and only God knows from what unknown and unimaginable angles that we come under the spotlight.
CCTV cameras are a boon to the traffic police, shopkeepers, private homes, jewellers etc etc in
catching the culprits who intrude or steal ,and commit traffic offences. Almost every day, some
theft is committed in the jewelleries in Kerala. The thieves, mostly women, enter the jewelleries,
pretending to be 'customers', and get away with some stuff. Later, some of them are traced and arrested with the visuals from the CCTV cameras.
Nowadays, people use their electronic devices to record whatever is available and post it to
the social media, sometimes causing a volcanic eruption of reactions. They vent their frustrations
on the authorities to expose corruption, mismanagement, poor service delivery etc. Food outlets
bear the brunt of people's wrath, if they feel that the price is too high and the quality is poor.
In Kerala, there's an outcry against unhygienic conditions 'behind the scenes' in hotels and restaurants. Filthy conditions have been exposed in the media by the customers. Many hotels
have been shut down, thanks to the citizens' use of their cameras.
I don't know how the Maggi fiasco erupted. Whatever it is, that company is ruined, at least temporarily. The funny part of the incident is that Amithabh Bachan and Madhuri Deekshit
have been charged for appearing the Maggi ads. They were doing their job !
In South Africa, KFC is on the receiving end. Indeed, KFC has scored a hat trick in adverse
publicity. First, a customer posted a video of clip of KFC staff washing chicken pieces on
the concrete floor, and a huge outcry erupted. KFC apologised with full-page ads in major
newspapers, and emphasized that it was an isolated incident. The matter didn't end there. Some days
later, a customer posted a video of a half-cooked chicken piece that he got from a KFC outlet.
Third, another video emerged. A KFC worker was seen sharpening a knife near the pavement !
Really bad days for the KFC.
Nowadays, ordinary people can't be underestimated because they are empowered and emboldened
with electronic gadgets, which they are determined to use with a vengeance. They can bring down,or
at least damage the reputation of big companies. No longer can any business fool the people with poor service.
