SID, MY NEW FRIEND
The disappearance and the consequent , presumed death of Appu, our cat,
has caused much heartbreak and anguish since April this year. He left
a vacuum that can't be filled. But relief came recently, in the form of
a tiny puppy called Sid, short for Sydney, a name suggested by my
grandchildren, Alyssa, Chrissa and Marissa, who live in Sydney. It was
their overenthusiasm and boisterous behaviour that precipitated Appu's disappearance , as a mild form of protest, due to some misunderstandings.
By a strange coincidence, when a friend offered me a puppy and asked
about my choice of colour, I opted for black and white, perfectly matching Appu's colour.
So the 3-month - old Sid has taken over the little kingdom left
vacant by Appu. He is a bundle of energy, intelligence, mobility, love, naughtiness, and sometimes, ferocity. His tiny body is an advantage
in running very fast, like a soccer penalty kick racing to the net. The small
villain follows me everywhere, sometimes biting me from behind, and
sometimes waylaying me, barking and jumping to bite. Sometimes, I wield
a stick to bring him into line. He is uncontrollable with excitement when
we arrive home after short outings.
Perhaps Sid is the reincarnation of Appu, with the same colour, same love,
and the same attitude. Today, Sid really shocked us. He was eating something that we didn't give him. I went near him to have a close look.
It was a tiny bird! Appu was an expert catcher of birds. ''Is this Appu sitting here, under the guise of a puppy? In this age of fakes and dupes, am I taken for a ride ? '' I wondered. I seized the dead bird from him, and
threw it away. He sniffed here and there frantically, searching for the
bird. I reprimanded him with these words:
'' No matter whether you are Sid or Appu, please don't kill birds.
They are our friends, and they also have a right to live. Unfortunately,
the number of birds here has dwindled recently due to wanton destruction
of the environment. Hundreds of trees have been cut down. Parks are destroyed for firewood. You should not add to a deplorable situation."
'' I'm very sorry. I wasn't aware of that, '' he said.
'' You can catch rats and mice if you find them.''
'' Agreed.''
'' Bye.''
