INTRODUCTION
Last night, the tepmperature here was -3 Degrees C.In the morning, frost was seen like
sugar scattered on the lawn. The frost melted in the bright morning sun,and the remaining
golden leaves of some trees dropped down. It's a day of final farewell to our vegetable
garden. The banana leaves also have dried up.
Despite the cold night, the sun shines brightly here, making the day time comfortably warm,
at about 20 Degrees. It's pleasant to sit on a chair outside, watching the constant activities
of various kinds of birds around here. Today I had many visitors, including some VIPs
such as a woodpecker couple, a kuruvi couple, thuthukunukkis, mainas, kili etc.The wood
peckers arrived at about 8 a.m, on my favourite tree, and made their non-stop 'kdak, kdak
chanting duet. The most beautiful visitors were a pair of kuruvis, most probably husband
and wife, who take turns to suck the nectar from the aloes. One is shiny deep blue and the
the other is brownish-white. They seem to have some disagreement about sharing the
nectar;they never come together. In case they come together, they fight, and fly away ,
with lightning speed. They are very sensitive to human beings, but today they were kind
enough to allow me to take photos and videos.
Of late,Appu, my cat has become very lazy due to the cold weather. He isn't very keen
in hunting for birds. What he likes is to bask in the sun,to escape from the cold.

I need to apologise to Sony karackal and Anoop Varghese P, for not reviewing any of
their works for many days.Actually it was due to hectic marking of the Mid-Year Exam
scripts. Now that it has been done, I venture to study AVP's latest poem 'Thirike'
'Thirike' is a very short poem or 'nurungu kavitha',but it contains ample food for thought.
Today being 16th June, which is a special day dedicated to the youth of South Africa, I
wish to read this poem in relation to the usual problems confronting the teenagers of
today, the problems that are universal .

The opening lines are pregnant with a lot of connotations. In the perspective of a
teenager, the metaphor of the kite is most suitable. Teenage is plagued by a lot of problems
such as alienation from the parents, drug addiction, suicidal tendencies, involvement in crime,
bullying,Satanism ( common in South Africa ),teenage pregnancy, dropping out of school
etc etc.

Manoharamaya, arthangal niranju kaviyunna varikal aanu iva. Some teenagers are like
kites drifting away, out of their own control, aimlessly tossed around, according to
one's whims and fancies, and also by peer pressue. In their essays, my students always
mention peer pressure and the excessive influence of social networks. Drop-outs and
teenage pregnacy are very common in my school.

When I read these lines, I have in mind the African thorn trees, where used plastic bags
easily get stuck. I also remember the famous lines of Shelley," I fall on the thorns of life,
I bleed.." Many youngsters end up without a future, having got stuck on the ''thorns' that
I have already mentioned.
Let us not forget the young people who run away from their homes, and even commit
suicide.

Very touching lines indeed. These lines hint that introspection and rehabilitation must
spring from the self. The disrupted life of a teenager can be normalised by counselling and
therapy.Towards the end of the poem, the poet gives a message of optimism and love.
Vazhi thettiya yuvathwthine nervazhikku nayikkendathu samoohathinte kadamayanu.
The teenager in this poem hasn't lost hope. He still has hope about return to a normal,
peaceful life.

Perhaps, in the sub-conscious mind of the poet, the story of the prodigal son's return has
influenced him when he wrote the poem, because that story is very touching and inspiring.
The last line, '' ee kattonnnu adangiyirunnenkil'' maybe referring to the turbulance in the
mind of the teenager, and also maybe the pressure exerted on young people by the
complexities of modern
life.
