A REVIEW OF SONY KARACKAL'S POEM,"VEYIL POOKKAL"

VEYILPOOKKAL Sunday,31 March  2013 Today  is a happy day all over the world  because people are celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The experience of Easter  is like  emerging from  a long, dark tunnel, after a frightening  journey.Easter  brings new  hope to mankind, motivating us to go forward, to begin a new chapter in our lives.Today is very significant  because we have a new Pope who leads by example,by washing the feet of women, and by giving up pomp and ceremony. I'm  sure Pope Francis will  inspire millions of people to build a better world. This Easter  is specially  joyful for me because I was able to complete and publish my Biblical play 'The resurrection  of Jesus Christ' to coincide with Easter. It's a milestone in my career, because it emerged from the bottom of my heart. 1 April   2013 In his latest poem 'Veyilpookkal' Sony Karackal  deviates from his pet theme, pranayam, and sings ab

A review of Sony karackal's poem "Swargam"

A review  of Sony  Karackal's poem "Swargam"   Ellavarum koodi paranju paranju enne oru  kavitha niroopakanakki.Ayyo enikku vayye.  Eee  Sony aanenkil vidunna mattilla.Chila  LIC agentumare pole vidathe pidikoodiyirikkukayanu.  Ethayalum kudungi poyi.Actually  my field is drama.I have been writing a play based on the  burial of Jesus,to coincide with Easter.Initially I thought of completing that play, and then respond  to Sony's new poem. After copleting 3 scenes,I felt that the review was getting late. So I set aside my play, and began to study the poem. In the 1960s,when I was a college student, there was a rising star in the Malayalam literary horizon,a young lady in her 20s,whose collection of short stories,"Njanenna Bhavam" caused a sensation, and was much talked about.(Unfortunately,I forgot her name). One day,the whole state of   Kerala was shocked to hear that she committed suicide. Many writers entertain suicidal tendencies, and there

A review of Sony Karackal's poem,'Thirike Varoo'

27 March,2013 Delareyville, South  Africa Today  is one of the most pleasant  days of this year.Light  rain fell,on and off, since yesterday, transforming  the whole atmosphere, with low temperature ranging from 18 to 25,and  the air being 100% pure, the birds flying criss-cross all over, with the mazhapullu ( a bird ) high up in the air, testing signs of more rain,my cat Appu, perfectly contented because during this vacation we are not flying to India-this is the ideal time to listen to music or to read a poem.In such serene  setting,"padatha veenayum padum' enne enikku parayanullu. If I'm able to analyse Sony's latest poem objectively,it's mainly due to the serenity of the place. The poem 'Thirike varoo ' is a cry in the wilderness.Oru rodanamanithu. The poet is falling on the thorns of agony, and is bleeding.Nadikale puzhakalodupamikkunnathu ella kavikalkkum priyamulla karyamanu.Periyare..peryare enna athulya ganam orkkuka. kulirum kondu kunungi na

A Review of Sony Karackal's new poem,' Pranayam'

A  review  of  'pranayam' In  chat,I commented to Sony  that he seems  to be on a rollercoster ride, which means he is producing   poems at breakneck  speed .As a critic,my predicament  is like that of a middle-aged soccer referee ,desperately ,trying to keep pace pace  with the youthful  Messi,Ronaldo etc.Impartially  speaking, I'm afraid,'pranayam' hasn't  reached  the high  standard of the  previous ones. 'Pranayam'  unnatha nilavarathilekkuyarnnilla  ennu  valachukettllathe parayunnathu kettu  Sony  keruvikkaruthu. I'm not  sure whether people  today  know the word keru and  keruvikkuka. It's an affectionate  word meaning  'oru  kochu pinakkam' within the family, and was used generously and frequently  by my parents and their  contemporaries. For instance, when I was annoyed with  my parents, they would say," entha nee keruvicho/ ninakku keruvano?".Ente niroopanam  vayichu Sony  keruvichalum  saramill

UNDER MY FAVOURITE TREE (poem)

UNDER  MY  FAVOURITE  TREE A continuous  hum reigns  over  here From  morning till  sunset Of  bees  in their  tens of  thousands Feasting  on  the  abundant  nectar On this  generous  tree With  a  thousand  branches Spread  out  in  all  directions A  thousand  giving  hands Radiating  like  the  sun's  rays Feeding  the  needy, without  fail Here it's  a  mela, with  bees  and  beetles And  kuruvis and other birds Dashing  from  branch to branch Up  and  down, beetles circling like helicopters There's  no  fighting here There's  more than enough  for  all. I hear  Mother  Nature's  music The  thamburu  of a thousand  bees Undisturbed, uninterrupted, the whole  day. This  is a temple giving  nectar  as prasadam To  the devotees  and  tired pilgrims This  is  temple, pyramid, lapa and umbrella In one,an  impenetrable  dome Against  the scorching  summer  sun. My trip to school (sharing experiences)

MY  TRIP  TO SCHOOL In my last  post on 13 March, I shared my experineces  with nature around here,on the way to school ,on both sides of the road near Lake Barberspan. The bird sanctuary is a haven of the rarest birds in the Southern hemisphere, and attracts bird-watchers from Denmark, Holland etc.It doesn't  attract large number of tourists.Let it be so,because when human beings flock in large numbers to a wild-life park, the birds and animals get disturbed. I was fascinated by the name chosen by the new Pope. The name of Francis has many implications.Right-thinking people feel hurt,on an hourly,or daily basis,by the cruelty inflicted on fellow human beings by some people, who have no appreciation  for life. I am fortunate enough to see some birds and animals in their natural habitat on my way  to school. They are there,in the sky,and on the fences, because nobody  disturbs them. They  have a particular liking for sitting on the fence. Incidentally,I have to mention that

13 March,a Happy Day

13 March 2013,a happy day (reflections on the election of Pope Francis 1 ) 13 is widely regarded as an unlucky number. But this myth has been exploded, with the election of the new Pope,Francis 1.This is a happy day not only for Catholics around the world, but for all the people of good will.Perhaps the election of the Pope is the only election in the world without any controversy. This election has mystery, drama, beauty, joy and a clear conclusion. The new Pope's selection of Francis as his name is particularly exciting to lovers of the enviornment, because St.francis of Assissi is the patron saint of animals and the environment. There are many stories about his association with nature. Most people are unaware of the blessings that surround us,because we don't have the time to pay attention to them.We are always on the run to achieve something big, bypassing the simple, beautiful things around us. I have been a lover of nature for long, since childhood, and later ins

"OOPERVALE" (skit)

' OOPERVALE' In Malayalam we say,"Palam kadakkuvolam Narayana,Narayana;Palam kadannu kazhinjal Koorayana,Koorayana."It means, when we have a crisis,we earnestly pray to God to overcome the crisis, but when it's over,we reagard God with indifference,or forget Him altogether.I'm not sure whether this is True or false, but in our attitude to Time,it's entirely true. Some of us,who are absent-minded,lazy,careless or irresponsible, sometimes confront some situations in which we beg Time to be merciful and to be on our side, but, after solving the problem,we forget our benefactor until the next crisis erupts. I call Time 'oopervale',which means GOD in Hindi. In Hindi films, some characters say,'sub oopervale ke hathom me hei'( fogive my poor Hindi).Have you ever noticed that Time's (clock) place on the wall in our homes is on par with that of Jesus Christ and the saints.Even if we don't call Time God,at least give him sainthood. When
